Gary, Jo-Anne, Jade and Dane Allie (GR1)

Gary graduated from the University of Cape Town’s medical school in 1987 . He has also completed courses in Trauma Life Support and a Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine Training Course. After completing his internship, Gary and Jo-Anne travelled extensively through Europe, North America, Aisa and Australia, during which time he worked as a locum in Canada for a few months. He had a private practice with Ervin Tobias for five years and a private practice with his brother Dean since 1996.

Jo-Anne completed a Diploma in Electronic Data Processing at the Port Elizabeth Technikon in 1984, and was recruited by a vehicle manufacturer in 1985 as a graduate trainee in computer programming. She moved up the ranks quickly, and when she resigned in 1998, she was in the supervisory position of Project Leader. She currently works as a consultant for Volkswagen and has completed courses in her field in as far abroad as Israel.

Gary and Jo-Anne have two children - Jade born in 1997 and Dane born in 1999.

 

Edward and Deidre Davids (GR2 - no longer on the journey)

Edward obtained his Higher Diploma in Mechanical Engineering from Port Elizabeth Technikon in 1990. He worked as a Test Engineer at General Motors for nine years in Port Elizabeth before immigrating to New Zealand in 2003. In New Zealand he has worked as a Product Engineer for Holden NZ. Edward has travelled to North America, Asia, Japan and Australia.

Deidre, graduated in 1991 from the University of Port Elizabeth with a degree in pharmacy. She completed her internship at and worked in the dispensary of the Livingstone Hospital for two years, after which she worked as a Department Manager at Aspen Pharmacare LTD before leaving for Zew Zealand. She has travelled extensively through North America, Asia, Australia. She currently works at Baxter Healthcare in Auckland New Zealand.

Unfortunately GR2 is no longer on the journey and returned to New Zealand in January 2008 due to work entry permit problems into England.

 

Dean, Vanita, Zack and Troy Allie (GR3 - no longer on the journey)

Dean graduated from the University of the Witwatersrand medical school in 1993, and after completing his internship, travelled extensively for three years around the East, Europe and Australia, while he also managed to complete courses in Advanced Trauma Life Support and Advanced Cardiac Life Support. He has been running a successful private practice with his brother, Gary Allie, in Port Elizabeth. He has obtained an MBA from Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University.

Vanita travelled extensively around Israel and the UK, before starting her studies at the University of Port Elizabeth in 1996. She graduated from this university in 1998 with a BA and obtained her Honours Degree in Human Resources and Labour Relations while employed at Woolworths in the Human Resources Department.

They have two sons - Zack born in 2002 and Troy born in 2004.

Unfortunately GR3 is no longer on the journey and returned to South Africa in December 2008.

 

Waldo Adams (no longer on the journey)

After taking some courses at the University of Cape Town, Waldo lived and worked in Mmabatho for four years. He then lived and worked in the UK for three years, from where he also travelled around Europe.

Upon his return in 2000 he qualified as a tour guide for the Eastern Cape and registered with South African Tourism. He spent five years as a tour guide, managing his tourism company.

Unfortunately we had to say farewell to Waldo from Kenya in July 2007 when he returned home to South Africa.
